POP-UP is IJC’s weekly street-side protest where volunteers gather on busy corners in Iowa City to hold signs that educate passersby about the threats of fascism and the actions of the current administration. It’s visible, it’s energizing, and it’s one of the simplest ways to get involved.

What Is POP-UP?
POP-UP is a weekly sign-holding protest held on the corners of Burlington and Gilbert streets in downtown Iowa City. Each session lasts about 30 minutes. Volunteers hold signs that highlight issues like attacks on free speech, violations of civil rights, ICE raids, and other harmful policies — reminding everyone passing by that these things are happening and that people are standing up against them.
Signs are provided, and no experience is necessary. Just show up a few minutes early to pick out a sign, and you’re good to go.
When and Where
- When: Most Wednesdays and Saturdays, 12:00 - 12:30 PM
- Where: Corners of Burlington and Gilbert streets, downtown Iowa City

Why It Matters
POP-UPs keep resistance visible. When hundreds of drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians see people out on a street corner every week holding signs, it sends a powerful message: people in this community are paying attention and are not willing to stay silent.
The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive — honks, waves, thumbs up, and people stopping to read the signs. That kind of energy is contagious and reminds everyone that they’re not alone in opposing what’s happening.

Just show up! POP-UP is open to everyone and requires no prior experience or commitment. Come once, come every week — whatever works for you.
