Signs of Solidarity

The Trump administration is deploying ICE into communities across the country to spread fear among immigrants. These agents are conducting increasingly aggressive raids in small businesses, neighborhoods, and public spaces. But we don’t have to just go along with this — we can stand up for our immigrant neighbors and show that they are essential and welcomed members of our community.

What Is Signs of Solidarity?

Signs of Solidarity is a canvassing initiative where volunteers visit local businesses and ask them to display signs near their entrance that declares support for immigrant communities and opposition to ICE’s tactics. Volunteers also encourage businesses to create a private area for employees that ICE cannot legally enter without a signed judicial warrant — a simple step that can help protect workers. When multiple businesses in a community take these steps, the impact is even greater — it lets everyone know that solidarity and defiance are everywhere.

The Signs of Solidarity campaign was developed by Indivisible in consultation with experts at the National Immigration Law Center and United We Dream.

Why It Matters

  • Business owners can take a stand. There have been dozens of incidents across the country of ICE agents entering small businesses without warrants and detaining people. A posted sign sends a clear message that immigrants are welcome.
  • Courage is contagious. When people see these signs throughout their community, it emboldens others to take action and speak up.
  • Community safety. When businesses stand up against ICE, it helps create a safer environment for everyone in the community.

How To Get Involved

  1. Print signs — Download and print copies of the official Signs of Solidarity graphics (available in multiple sizes).
  2. Visit local businesses — Talk to business owners or managers and ask if they’ll display a sign. Restaurants, coffee shops, salons, doctors’ offices, boutiques, gyms, and more are all great candidates.
  3. Report back — After your visits, fill out the report-back form so we can track our progress.

You can canvass solo, bring a friend, or coordinate with a larger group to cover an entire commercial district together — do whatever makes you most comfortable!
