We recently picked up this action items card at Kitty Corner Social Club, a local Iowa City business that supports progressive causes. It’s a simple, practical list of things anyone can do today, and we wanted to share it more widely.

Here’s what the card recommends, along with links to IJC resources that can help.
Take Care of Yourself
Rest, hydrate, and remember to find joy in the quiet moments. Think of it as a gas tank you need to keep full. Burnout helps no one, and sustaining your energy is an act of resistance in itself.
Get to Know Your Neighbors
Community starts with the people closest to you. Introduce yourself. Check in on each other. Strong neighborhoods are harder to divide.
Support Local, Immigrant-Owned Businesses
Visit and support our local, immigrant-owned businesses. Your dollars are a direct investment in the community you want to see thrive.
Read
Reading sparks resistance, builds awareness, empathy, and strategic insight into systems of power. For recommended reading, check out the resources on our Info & News Sources page, including Timothy Snyder’s resources on resisting authoritarianism and Robert Reich’s guide to finding trustworthy news.
Know Your Rights Around ICE
Educate yourself and others on how to handle encounters with ICE, navigating possible detention, and supporting legal assistance organizations. Our What To Do When You See ICE checklist and ICE Watch guide are designed for exactly this.
Spend With Purpose
Shop small when you can. Spend local. For organized boycott campaigns, visit Boycott Here or Boycott Central to find well-organized efforts you can join.
Contact Your Elected Representatives
Email and call your local elected representatives. Our Contacting Elected Officials page has phone numbers, tools like 5 Calls and Resistbot, and tips for making your voice heard.
Thanks to Kitty Corner Social Club for creating and distributing this resource in the Iowa City community.
