No Kings 3: From a Moment to a Movement

Thank you to everyone who braved the chilly winds to come out for No Kings 3 last Saturday. Your continued support means the world to us, and we’re grateful to have you standing alongside us as we work to defeat fascism and rebuild a thriving Iowa. Thank you as well to the organizers from nearly a dozen organizations that made this event both safe and possible.

Moments and Movements

As we reflect on the third No Kings Day, we want to address the elephant in the room. After each of these events, there is usually a common refrain from participants: “What did we accomplish? What comes next? What can I do?” If you’re asking these questions, you’re on the right track.

The truth is that No Kings rallies are one small part of the resistance, not the entirety of it. They are moments, not movements. One two-hour rally cannot defeat the authoritarian rot within Iowa or the United States, no matter how many millions of people participate. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t hold these rallies or that they’re not worth it. It just means that resistance to tyranny is not any one action, but a series of small acts and choices we make every day.

Get Connected

If No Kings 3 left you looking for the next step, something more than any one rally, we urge you to get connected with local organizations. We hope you’ll consider joining IJC, of course, but there are so many great organizations here in Johnson County and throughout Iowa that are worth your consideration as well. Any of them would be a great place to volunteer, to transform the moment of No Kings Day into a movement that builds power and moves us toward liberty and justice for all. Check out our allies page to see some of the organizations doing great work in our community.

Yes, We Mean You

If you read that and thought “Well, they don’t mean me,” yes, we do! Just about any skill set or interest has an application in our work. Come to one of our upcoming new member meetings and talk to any of our organizers: we are regular people with families, jobs, hobbies, and dreams. Most of us never expected to be part of a movement like this. Each of us is here now because we could no longer accept being helpless observers as our nation slid further and further into authoritarianism.

To win this fight will require sustained, organized resistance. It will require time, effort, and resources. Sometimes it is fun and exciting, sometimes it is hard and difficult work. But a better, freer, more just world is always worth the effort in the long run. If you have learned anything from No Kings Day, we hope it is that you are not alone in this fight. There are so many of us standing right beside you. Iowans have stood together through pandemics, floods, derechos, and droughts. We have the courage and strength to defeat fascism too.

Standing Indivisible with all of you,

Indivisible Iowa Johnson County
